Stocked for the season
Spools, cases and kits sized for multiple installs.
Christmas light supply, organized the way an install goes
A roofline install is built from the same handful of parts every time: socket wire, bulbs, a way to finish the ends, and a way to hold it to the house. Christmas Light Supply stocks each of those parts in the quantities installers go through in a season, and groups them by the job they do rather than by brand.
Socket wire
C9 socket wire comes on 1,000 ft. spools in 12, 15 and 24 in. spacing, plus magnetic spools for metal roofs and fascia. Spools let each run be cut to the exact length of the roofline, with no dead wire coiled behind a gutter and no bare sockets at the end of a pre-made strand.
Bulbs
C9 LED retrofit bulbs are sold in 25-packs for re-lamps and in 500-bulb cases for new runs. Faceted, smooth, opaque and SMD styles are available across sun warm, warm, pure and cool white, and a full set of colors. One 500-bulb case fills 500 ft. of 12 in. wire or about 625 ft. of 15 in. wire.
Plugs and power
Slide-on male and female plugs finish cut wire without stripping. They come in 50-packs and 1,000-count cases. Lamp cord bridges gaps between runs, and photocell timers switch displays on at dusk.
Mounting
C9 O-clips hold each socket to the gutter edge, and 8 in. light stakes place bulbs along walkways and beds. O-clips come in 100-packs and 1,000-count cases for crews that clip every job.
Working out quantities
Measure every run and add the footage together. For 12 in. spacing, the number of sockets equals the footage; for 15 in., multiply the footage by 0.8. Order bulbs to match the socket count, one clip per socket, and one male and one female plug per run. For crews lighting many houses in a season, the math above per house, summed across the route, sets the case count.
If the job is a single house or you'd rather not piece it together, the C9 installation kits bundle wire, bulbs, plugs and clips at 250 to 4,000 ft.
Pricing by the pack, the case and the foot

Estimating a C9 roofline job
Every roofline estimate starts with the same measurement: total linear feet of every edge that gets lit. Walk the house and measure each gutter line, rake edge, peak and dormer separately, then add them up. Record the runs individually as well as the total, because the number of runs sets the plug count and the location of each run's start sets where power has to reach.
From the footage, the materials follow directly:
- Socket wire: the total footage, plus a few feet per run for the lead from the outlet to the first socket.
- Bulbs: one per socket. At 12 in. spacing that's one per foot; at 15 in. spacing multiply the footage by 0.8; at 24 in., by 0.5.
- Clips: one per socket, plus about 5% for breakage, corners and the odd clip that won't seat on an old gutter.
- Plugs: one male and one female per run.
Materials cost per foot
Using case pricing, the core materials for a 12 in. spacing run work out to roughly $1.14 per foot: $0.638 for the bulb, $0.228 for a C9 O-clip, and about $0.275 of socket wire. Plugs add $1.40 per run for a male and female pair. At 15 in. spacing, the bulb and clip cost per foot drops by about a fifth because there are fewer sockets per foot.
That per-foot figure is what lets an estimate be priced from a single tape measurement. A 180 ft. single-story home at 12 in. spacing is about $205.38 in materials; a 320 ft. two-story is about $365.12.
Stocking for a season
Crews that install on many homes each season buy materials in cases and cut runs on site. The practical approach is to estimate the season from last year's route: total the footage of every returning customer, add a margin for new sales, and buy spools, bulb cases and clip cases against that total.
What runs out first
Clips and plugs run out before anything else. Clips break on cold mornings, get dropped off ladders and get used up faster on older gutters that need two per socket. Plugs get used on every cut, including the re-cuts when a run is measured wrong. Carrying a full case of each on the truck prevents a second trip to finish a job.
Re-lamp inventory
Returning customers usually need some bulbs replaced each year. Keeping 25-packs of the color temperatures you install most — typically warm white and sun warm white — handles re-lamps without opening a new case. Color temperature is the thing to match: a warm white bulb dropped into a sun warm white run shows as a slightly whiter dot from the street.
Spacing, bulb style and color
Choosing spacing by house
12 in. spacing is the default for single-story homes, entrances and anything viewed from closer than the street. 15 in. is common on two-story homes and commercial rooflines viewed from a distance, and it saves bulbs and clips over long runs. 24 in. spacing suits very long commercial edges and fence lines where the line only needs to read as a row of points.
Faceted, smooth and opaque bulbs
Faceted C9 bulbs break the light into points and read as sparkle. Smooth bulbs look like traditional glass C9s. Opaque bulbs glow evenly across the whole lens and look like painted ceramic — they're the usual choice for colored displays where the goal is a solid color rather than a bright point. Keep one style per run; mixing faceted and smooth on the same edge is noticeable.
Colors that sell
Warm white carries the majority of residential installs. Sun warm white is the closest match to the amber of old incandescent C9s and suits traditional architecture. Pure white reads crisp and modern. Multi-color and red/white patterns are popular for family homes; the installation kits include several pre-set patterns so a mixed-color roofline can be ordered in one line.
Mounting by surface
C9 O-clips ring each socket and hook to the gutter edge, the standard mount for a C9 roofline, with no drilling or nails. Light stakes place bulbs along walkways and beds using the same socket wire.
Finishing and powering runs
Slide-on plugs clamp onto cut wire without stripping: push the wire into the plug body, close it, and the prongs pierce the insulation. The male plug goes on the end facing power; the female plug goes on the far end so the next run can connect. Lamp cord extends power from an outlet to the start of a run or bridges a gap such as a garage door. A photocell timer at the outlet switches the whole display on at dusk and off after the set hours.
Plan circuits before cutting: note which outlets are on which breaker, keep each circuit's total load within its rating, and use GFCI-protected outdoor outlets.
Questions
How do I price a roofline job from the materials?
Measure total linear footage, then multiply by the materials cost per foot at your spacing: bulb, clip and socket wire per foot, plus a male and female plug per run. The pricing tables above give the per-unit cost of each part at case quantity, so the calculation works directly from a tape measurement.
Is it cheaper to build runs from spools or buy kits?
Building from a 1,000 ft. spool, bulb cases, a clip case and plug packs usually costs less per foot than the equivalent kit, and leaves spare plugs. Kits cost more but put everything in one line item with a choice of color patterns, which is simpler for a single house.
What spacing do most installers use?
12 in. spacing is the most common on single-story homes and entrances, and 15 in. on two-story homes and commercial buildings. Many crews stock both and choose by how far the roofline is from the street.
How many clips should I order per job?
One per socket plus about 5% for breakage and corners. On older gutters where clips don't seat well, some installers use two per socket on the worst sections.
Which bulbs should I keep on the truck for re-lamps?
A 25-pack in each color temperature you install regularly, usually warm white and sun warm white, plus whatever colors your returning customers use. Matching the color temperature is what makes a re-lamp invisible.
Do slide-on plugs work on all C9 socket wire?
Slide-on plugs are made for the flat two-conductor wire used on C9 socket spools and lamp cord. Cut the wire square, push it fully into the plug and close it so both prongs pierce the insulation.
Do you sell socket wire by the foot?
Socket wire is sold on 1,000 ft. spools in 12, 15 and 24 in. spacing. Spools are cut to length on site, so one spool covers several rooflines.
Can I mix bulb brands on the same socket wire?
Any C9 bulb with an E17 intermediate base fits C9 socket wire. For a consistent look, keep one bulb style and color temperature per run.
How much does shipping cost?
Shipping is free on all orders to the contiguous United States, with no order minimum.
When will my order ship?
Every order ships the same day it's placed, whatever time you order. There's no cutoff.
What's the difference between C9 and C7 bulbs?
C9 bulbs are the larger of the two, about 1⅛ in. across on an E17 intermediate base, and are the standard for rooflines and commercial displays viewed from the street. C7 bulbs are smaller, on an E12 candelabra base, and suit close-viewed spaces like porches, railings and walkways.
How many bulbs do I need for a roofline?
Convert the run length to inches and divide by the socket spacing. A 100 ft. roofline is 1,200 in.; at 12 in. spacing that's 100 sockets and 100 bulbs, and at 15 in. spacing it's 80.
Should I choose 12 in. or 15 in. spacing?
12 in. spacing gives a tighter, brighter line and is common on single-story homes and anything viewed up close. 15 in. spacing uses about 20% fewer bulbs for the same footage and is common on larger homes and commercial rooflines viewed from a distance.
